Some Good Reasons to Attend the Car Boot Sale!

What is lying in your spare rooms or the attic that you could make a few Euro on rather than throw out?   De-cluttering is good for the psyche!

Are you a student in Maynooth setting up home in a flat or apartment?  If so its absolutely unbelievable what you can pick up at the car-boot sale for a couple of Euro to help start furnishing your flat or apartment.

Young married couples take note in these recessionary times!  Absolutely unbelievable the quality items you can pick up to help get you started frugally furnishing your new home.

Tips for buyers
Caveat emptor. Buyer beware.

Check plugs and fuses and wiring on electrical items before using them at home. Otherwise you risk electrocution or your house burning down.

Don't be afraid to ask for a discount especially if you buying a number of items.
Haggle by all means but if the seller is offering an item at an already rock-bottom bargain price try not to take the pee.

The one-off seller will generally accept low offers near the end of the boot sale to avoid taking items to bung up the garage/attic again.

Dealers are less keen to drop prices as they will simply take goods onto next sale. A dealer is more likely to drop prices if the turn out of buyers is low
due to uncertain weather or bad weather forces the dealer to pack up early. The dealer will refer to this as, "Having a bad day".Yet this could be a good day for a buyer to pick up a bargain and a good reason not to decide on staying in bed at the first sign of a grey sky.

Take some change with you.

Don't keep all your money in the same pocket/purse or flash huge sums of cash. Pickpockets unfortunately go to boot sales too.

Take batteries with you to test items actually work.

Take a tape to measure items.

Let the seller set up their table and wares when they arrive. Avoid the temptation of diving into the open boots and doors of sellers' cars.

Be civil to sellers and other buyers alike. This way you will gain many new friends for free. A true bargain at the boot sale.

Ask or take a friend to help you carry large items back to your car. A week off work with a slipped disc is not a bargain.

Write down the car model/colour/number plate and the row number if you pay for an item and intend to collect it later. It is very easy to forget the pesky car's location at a busy boot sale.

Car Boot Sale will be held in Maynooth on Bank Holiday Mondays.  Car-boot sales organised by Maynooth Kilcock Lions Club commenced Mon 29 October 2012.

Some other Car Boot Hints and Tips!

1.) Most car boots start early for sellers. Be there at least half an hour before the appointed start time.

2.) When you arrive, and start to set-up, you will be beset by a number of buyers, including other Car-Booters, who will hassle you into selling your best items at knock-down prices. Hence, you need to know what to ask for your items, AND what you are prepared to sell them for. Remember, it is a market, and haggling is all part of the fun (?) (It has been noted that some items let go early appear on other Car-Booters’ stalls later, and, of course, at a higher price!)

3.) While it is not necessary to have a table to sell, it does seem to be the norm now. Try to have a helper with you, at least for your first sale. You will see many people selling on their own at Car-Boots. But it is my observation that usually they are very experienced and well able to hold their own in any negotiation/situation.

4.) Don’t put all your best stuff out at once. Have a “Draw” item that gets people to come to have a serious look at it. They may not buy it, but they will take a closer look at the rest of your stall. When it’s sold, put out another “Goodie”. You will sell more if people congregate around your stall, but don’t get into a long conversation with one customer.

5.) Make sure to chat to the sellers beside you when you arrive. While they will be busy with their own stuff, they will usually keep an eye on how you are doing and help out if required.

6.) Bring enough of a cash float with you, in small notes and €2s/€1s and 50cents. Don’t price anything below 50cents. It saves a whole amount of bother giving change. Remember, you will most likely have to pay for your stall (€15/€25) before you make your first sale.

7.) Be careful of someone offering a large note €50/€20 for a small purchase. Check notes with your finger-nail; there is a small rough area on every (genuine) note, which you should feel before you hand over change. Use a cash-bag on a belt around you. Hide large notes you take in away safely and quickly.

8.) Dress warmly; bring a flask and something to eat. It’s very easy to spend a lot of your hard-earned take on food at the Car-Boot. Resist buying from other stalls unless you spot a REAL bargain. Remember, you are there to de-clutter your own house; not to keep it in the same state.

9.) Bring a sheet of plastic to throw over your stall in case of rain. If it starts to rain very heavy, pack up early so that your stock does not get too wet.

10.) A lot of car boot sellers sit on the edge of the opened boot of their car. It’s a sore place to sit without a cushion, or you could bring a folding chair with you.

11.) Check with the organisers about on-site toilets. Very Important.
